Dolphins
Baby dolphins, called calves, and adult
dolphins are really playful. Dolphins can swim as soon as they are born. When
the calf is born the parent lifts it to the top of the water so it can take its
first breath.
Dolphins usually live by the Equator but some
of them live in different places. For example the River Dolphin lives in rivers
or lakes, and the Hectors Dolphin lives near land.
Dolphins use echolocation. Echolocation works
when dolphins produce a high pitch sound by listening to the echo and
interpreting the time it took before the echo came back. Dolphins use echoes to
locate fish and other objects. The
dolphin estimates the distances of the object.
Dolphins don’t have gills (gills are
something that helps some animals breath under water.) They have blowholes.
Dolphins have great eyesight.
