Giant Pandas

Giant Pandas
If you want to learn about a very cool creature, with white and black all over, then I’d suggest you continue reading. Giant pandas live in Central China in forests in mountains. Giant pandas live in a few mountain ranges in central China, in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces. They once lived in lowland areas, but farming, forest clearing, and other development now restrict giant pandas to the mountains.
Giant pandas mainly eat bamboo. Over 99% of the food they eat is bamboo. Bamboo is very tough to eat, but because they have sharp teeth they are able to eat it. Also, since they have five fingers, and a thumb, they can hold it better.
Scientists do not know a wild panda’s lifespan, but they are sure it is shorter than pandas in zoos. Pandas in zoos can live to 35 years old. Scientists think pandas in the wild live to 14 to 20 years old.
Pandas are black and white mammals and it looks like a bear. They have black spots on ears, eyes, legs, and shoulders. Pandas have thick coats that keep them warm in the winter. Even though most people think pandas are cute, they are very dangerous. On all fours pandas are 2 to 3 feet and weigh between 200 lb and 250 lb.

Pandas can give birth once they are 4. After 95 to 160 days a young could be born. Even though a panda may give birth to 2 young, usually only 1 survives. Pandas are slow breeders so that is sort of why they are endangered. Babies stay with their mothers for 2 to 3 years and then they go off to the wild. When a panda cub is born, it weighs about 3 to 5 ounces and is about the size of a stick of butter. They are pink and blind. Their fur has not grown yet. Panda cubs only open their eyes when they are 6 to 8 weeks old. They are not mobile until they are 3 months old.

How Big is a Billion!

How Big is a Billion?

Mrs. Terry’s Math Enrichment group did
a project on How Big is a Billion? Everybody had to participate in the project. They could pick a question that they wanted to answer as long it was about a billion. We were suppose to draw pictures on our posters too. Daniel Zhou and Campbell Sion’s question for the How Big is a Billion? was how many people could eat with a billion dollars? Jacob Bernstein and Brendan Raynor’s question was how many pairs of shoes would each NBA player need to have a billion pairs? Grace Nieh and Jung-Jai’s question was how many computers could you buy with a billion dollars? Alex Semenza and Andrew Holzbach’s question was how many scoops of ice cream equal a billion licks? In the end we sent out our project to the H&R Block, we didn’t win but we got a $50 gift card.

In the book Fudge-A-Mania the characters are Peter, Fudge, Turtle, Shela, Peters Grandma, Shela’s Grandpa, Peter’s Mom,  & Dad, Shela’s Mom & Dad & Tootsie.  In the beginning Peter’s family & Shela’s family go to a duplex.  In the middle Peter & Fudge go to the library & Peter falls in love a young  librarian named Isabelle.  At the end Peter’s grandma Shela’s grandpa get married!  Something I think that was funny was that Shela said “Even though we are related, I will always hate you!”

3rd Grade Field Trip

  THE THIRD GRADe FIELD TRIP

For the third grade field trip we went to The Connecticut Historical Society and The Old State House. They are both in Hartford.

We learned why we are called the nutmeg state. One reason is good, one is bad . The good one is that there were a couple of peddlers that sold a lot of nutmeg. As time went on there were   more and more peddlers.

The bad reason is that peddlers sold fake nutmeg that was wood. People bought it and when they put it on food they were eating wood.

The lady guiding us sent around a nutmeg and asked if it was fake or not . It was fake. It was made of wood.

When we went to The Old State House where we renacted the story of the   Charter oak. Then we did a scavenger hunt. after that we got to dress up! finilly it was time to go back to school. it was a great field trip and i hope third grade can have another!

How Big is a Billion?

How Big is a Billion?
In math enrichment 4th graders are participating in the How Big is a Billion project sponsored by H&R Block on Facebook.  If one of Mrs. Terry’s enrichment students win they will win Vinton school $3,000. In this online contest you had to come up with a way to make a billion. For example, you could ask , how many people can you feed with $1,000,000,000 or how many pairs of shoes would each NBA player get to have a billion total pairs of shoes in the NBA. The enrichment students had to create posters to go along with their question. At least half of the poster had to be hand drawn or it couldn’t win the prize money. The students posters came out very, very, very, very, very, very well, in Mrs. Terry’s opinion. We all hope that one pair of students win the $3,000 grant for Vinton school!

By Lily Helphinstine & Clara Shangold
          All the flowers are blooming
            The animals are moving
              The sun is coming in
             The snow is going out

In winter we wanted the snow
And now we want it to go
           Now that spring is here
            Everyone can cheer
No more snow for this year

Now that the Easter Bunny is here
                    Everyone can cheer
He is giving out Easter eggs                                            And no one has to beg
