Mars Opinion Piece

In 2035 people will be able to live on our final frontier-Mars. Many people have already paid to move to the red planet, but one person who hasn’t and never will is …… me! I’m fine where I am with my feet on the ground, home sweet home on planet Earth.

My first reason for staying on Earth is the unknown dangers of Mars. The only information we have about Mars is from robots. The robots may not have seen everything, and may not have noticed any dangers. Since we don’t know a lot, the dangers on Mars could be endless.

Another reason for not going to the red planet is the crazy temperature. For instance, in the day it gets so hot, you’ll fry like an egg. At night, it gets so frigid you’ll turn into an iceberg. The crazy temperatures of Mars aren’t my favorite things.

Lastly, if I went to our final frontier, I’d miss my friends on Earth. On the red planet, it would be literally impossible to find friends as good as the ones I have on Earth. Also, on Mars there would be no lovely teachers at Vinton. My friends (and the great teachers) couldn’t be replaced by others on the red planet.

As you can see, I’ll be staying on Earth mainly because of the unknown dangers of Mars, the crazy temperatures, and missing my friends. So take my advice and when you have the opportunity to go to Mars, say, “No thanks, I’ll stay.”

Dolphins

Baby dolphins, called calves, and adult dolphins are really playful. Dolphins can swim as soon as they are born. When the calf is born the parent lifts it to the top of the water so it can take its first breath.

Dolphins usually live by the Equator but some of them live in different places. For example the River Dolphin lives in rivers or lakes, and the Hectors Dolphin lives near land.

Dolphins use echolocation. Echolocation works when dolphins produce a high pitch sound by listening to the echo and interpreting the time it took before the echo came back. Dolphins use echoes to locate fish and other objects. The dolphin estimates the distances of the object.

Dolphins don’t have gills (gills are something that helps some animals breath under water.) They have blowholes. Dolphins have great eyesight.

St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick’s Day

Have you ever heard of a holiday called St. Patrick’s Day? Well, every year it’s on the 17th of March.
Here are some facts about St. Patrick’s Day. Most people think the color that represents St.Patrick’s Day is green; but it is really blue. Green became associated with St. Patrick’s Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by many fairies and immortals, and also by many people to encourage their crops to grow.

Some people think that the first St. Patrick’s Day was in Ireland; but actually it was in Boston in 1737. Did you know that in Chicago, on St. Patrick’s Day, the rivers are dyed green. In Seattle, there is a ceremony where a green stripe is painted down the roads. Some people wear green on St. Patrick’s Day to avoid being pinched. Isn’t that just crazy? There are so many other facts but that’s up to you whether you want to look them up. See ya!

The Comic Book Club

Vinton had a comic book club! The club was held at the end of the day and was held by Miss Carbenell. The parents needed to pick up their kid at 5:00. At the club you listened to comics and you could even make one! You could also make a superhero! The last day was on 2/22/14. We came on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You could bring snacks. (Sadly, the club is over for now.)

Snowboard Cross

Snowboard Cross was added into the winter olympics in 2006. In this sport 6 snowboarders all board down a mountain at once.The first snowboarder to get down the mountain either wins or moves on to the next round. Contact is allowed but not on purpose. If you fall you can still continue. You can’t go out of the boundaries or you are eliminated. The gold medal winner in the 2014 Sochi, Russia winter olympics was Pierre Vaultier from France. He’s 26 years old. He is the first French to win gold in snowboard cross. The silver medalist is Nikolay Olyunin of Russia. He’s 22 years of age. The bronze medal recipient is from U.S.A. His name is Alex Deibold. He’s 27 years old. In 2010 he waxed the boards for the olympic competitors. Now he has won the bronze medal. In snowboard cross you should never stop going because when someone falls you still could get back in it.
