Dragon Attack

DRAGON
ATTACK
By Jack Mattingly

Eddie, Eric and I were going on an adventure on a cliff that no one ever tried to climb it because there was a dragon on top of it. but, we wanted to see if it was true or not. It was supposed to be in the heart of the mountain and was an avalanche dragon, one of the worst kind to meet.
there was a tunnel that got blocked up with the hardest kind of rock ever to protect the dragon. Every 10,000 years it opens just on a special day, january 1st. That was today!
We set out. when we were almost there we could tell because of all the avalanches. There were a few close calls like when a rock fell on my foot and it hurt so badly I almost screamed in pain but refrained so I didn’t wake up the dragon.
when we finally got there we could hear the snoring sound of the dragon. We soon noticed that the sound was more than one dragon. that meant that there was a mother, father, and a few babies. We all thought for a minute, “should we go in and get all the extremely rare crystals or should we not go in and have no cool crystals?” We all yelled but sort of a whisper because we did not want to wake the dragon at the same time, “LETS GO IN!”
We started in and the noise got louder and louder the closer and closer we got.  soon, we got to the area with all the cool ores. And, all of a sudden, the snoring stopped! We thought to ourselves, “grab and go, Grab and go!
“AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!” Eddie got attacked. “Leave without Meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!”
“We must go back and get him,” I remarked worriedly to Eric.
Eric replied, “they are going to be ready for us.”
“We don’t have much time before the day ends and before they eat Eddie,” I still said worried about Eddie.
“I have a plan,” Eric said proudly. “we should find what avalanche dragons weaknesses are.”
“Water!” we both whispered at once.
“I think there is a stream nearby. i can just hear it in that cave because they need to drink at one point,” I said with a little higher voice than before. “Let’s go in . . . NOW!”
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH,” we both yelled.
“Bye-bye,” I yelled to the father Dragon as we ran.
“I think I can see him,” yelled Eric. “he is over that PIT OF LAVA”!!!!
“Help me”, “help me!” yelled Eddie.
I said finally calm, “See that stone like a ladder? Eric and I can pick it up and you can get on it, ok?” I yelled to Eddie so he could hear,
“I will try,” Eddie said to me unsurely.
“3-2-1, jump, now!” Eric and I yelled together.
“phew, you made it!” I said to Eddie.
“I want to STAY!” said Eddie. “They have been nice to me and gave me some crystals. If you want to stay too I could ask them,” offered Eddie.
“I’ll stay if you stay,” I replied.
“Ok, let me go get them. follow me,” I said quickly to Eddie.
“I think they are right there, jack,” Eric said not sure.
“Yep, they are over there, so let me ask them,” Eddie said to us then turned to the Dragons. “Can you let these people stay?”
“What are you saying to them?’ I asked Eddie.
“Oh, I studied at a special section of the library and it tells you how to speak to dragon. I will teach you later,” Eddie said proudly of his linguistic skills.

To find out what happens next… read the sequel to come later, or make up your own ending!

Cheetahs

CHEETAHS!!!!!!!!                                                                 cheetah.jpg

Here are some facts about CHEETAHS!

Cheetahs are the fastest land animals. The cheetah can run up to  70 to 75 mph. The cheetahs run after their prey  such as various antelopes and hares to get food.
The cheetah can have up to nine cubs (babies) in the wild, but cheetahs are not good breeders when they are captured.
We have to help the cheetahs so they don’t get endangered. Cheetahs are the most endangered species of the cat; there are about 10,000 cheetahs left in Africa.
They have really good eyesight that helps them find food. The Cheetah hunts in thedaylight.
They grow to be 3.5 to 4.5 feet tall. Cheetahs can grow up to be 77 to 143 pounds.

Idina Menzel

Idina Menzel

Most kids know Idina Menzel as the voice of Elsa in Frozen.  I can’t believe that Frozen is going on Broadway. She is also starring in a short film called Frozen Fever. You can only see it with the previews before Cinderella.

Another movie she was in is Enchanted. This is a movie about a girl that is in a fairytale and gets pushed  and goes into the human world. She has to find a way to get home.

One of my favorite movies she is in is Wicked. It is the story before The Wizard of OZ. It has a beautiful song called Defying Gravity. I love it because I saw The Wizard of OZ  and I loved knowing what happened before.

Platypus'

 Platypus’

Did you know platypus’ are one of the only mammals that lay eggs? Only two mammals in the entire world that we know of lay eggs. Unlike bird eggs the baby platypus is already alive inside the egg. Also, to add to the weirdness of platypus’ they are one of the only mammals that have poison. Platypus’ also have some type of sense, electro-reception. They close their eyes, ears, and nose when they dive. This is very awkward because you’d never know if you’d crash into something or if you’re even close to prey. However, they know through an electro-receptor  on their bills that pick up senses such as a shrimps’ tail  from 10 centimeters away.

When the first platypus was found in Europe a long time back, people thought it was the work of someone sewing a duck’s bill to the back of a mole or beaver-shaped animal.  But, it is closer to a beaver because the fur is waterproof unlike the fur of a mole. But, it’s still not close  to any other mammal we know. This is because it is a mix of lots of mammals. Eighty percent is a mix.

Platypus’ like to eat annelid worms, insect larvae, crayfish, and freshwater shrimp. The mouth isn’t exactly the bill- it’s under the bill!

And, to wrap this up, the Europeans were wrong about it being sewn. Even if it was sewn the platypus’ bill is much more useful than any other bill that humankind knows presently.  ☺ By Matthew  Billings-Chui

Griffins- Chapters 3 & 4

Griffins... by Hope Fu ...continued
Chapter 3
At Scott’s house they all had turns to talk about a chosen topic; tonight was Scott’s mom’s turn. Emma Griffin Blade was a patient woman who only really despised going shopping.
“I can’t believe my own son would splash paint on the guide of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, lied about it, blamed another student, and on top of it all, forged my signature  on the sign up slip to go on a field trip just to ruin a work of art!”
As you can see, Mr.Conn was a great exaggerator .
Holly’s luck was no better. At her house there was only one topic- what the punishment should be for whoever  did something wrong. Therefore, when nobody  did anything wrong, the only sound in the house was absolutely silence.  Before you say that is unusual, the Seman family went back to The Dark Times.  It had been a very old tradition  in their family.
Don’t ask why. I have no idea.
Both of their punishments were the following:  A month of grounding, no screen for a year (not that they used any either.) , and the worst-- writing an apology to Mr. Conn.... for something they hadn’t done.
At night, Scott could not help feeling more than a just a bit ....worried.  He also wasn’t able to dwell on Holly, who had not only gotten a bad grade, but had also won a terrible reputation.

Chapter 4

The next day, their apologies were given, and as an added punishment, they had to read them aloud, which caused an uproar and soon they found themselves not in school but a 5-days-a-week prison.
For example, during lunch they got pelted with all the nasty smelly leftovers from the bag lunches. And, during recess, well, let’s just say that they were sent to the nurse's office more than once.
The only bright side of this affair was that Holly and Scott were now bonded together against Mr. Conn and as a team, they managed an accomplishment - against the crude and lying man, of course. The first  one happened like this :
“We need to counterattack.”
Those words were the first spark to the great mission that they soon hoped to accomplish.  You must remember that Scott was only 13 and Holly was 12 at that time and it must be hard to attack a full-grown adult when one is that age.
The Accomplishment:
“Meet me at the treehouse at 4:00 am.” ( Yes, am , the treehouse was secret so, they had to sneak there in the morning.)  At 4 am , they snuck into the old fort and took their places next to the fire.
“ Do you have a plan?” asked Scott.
“No, but we’ll think of something,” answered Holly.
They sat there gazing around thinking of a way to strike against the venomous teacher and not be found.
The room they were sitting in was well furnished- but by no means opulent, though there were some neat gadgets they had made themselves. There was a large shelf that had been fashioned by Scott( who was not a bad carpenter) which had many things on it including a sling shot, some rocks, a copy of My Side of the Mountain, in which they earned how to make fires, collect the food in the house (which was in a cupboard which also made by Scott )and how to fashion furniture. The rest of the shelf was occupied with Holly’s electronic devices which she had made. There was a safe which you had to whisper the password for it to open (which had a map of the town inside it) and a detector, which you whispered what you wanted to find it would begin an automatic search for it.
Scott thought of all the things that had happened in Matilda and wondered if what had happened to the parents would be an idea.
Holly thought of what had happened in Series of Unfortunate Events, and thought of what Violet, Klaus, and Sunny had done.
At last, after several, long minutes, they devised a plan. They went home and prepared for what they were going to do. After that, Scott went to bed and suddenly, an old man slaughtering a griffin and a hippogryph came into view.
“I shall demolish all the magical scum in the world!” he screamed.
Then Scott awoke. With sweat popping out of his head, he got up to begin the day of triumph.
He got up early, so he could prepare. He went to school early, and got out a screwdriver. Holly was waiting for him with a map of the school. Their school, which went from preschool to 12th grade, was rather large and they did not trust themselves to get lost in it.
The different rooms all had number plates and they were all attached with screws. They took the plate number 33 and went to room 8 and switched them around. Room 8, was one of the homerooms of the twelfth graders, and Mr. Conn had no business in that room.
As the twelfth graders came, the seventh graders heard a sound of yelling, as the twelvth  grade teacher looked around wildly  for his coffee yelling about secretaries that were not worth their pay.
Suddenly, the window burst open, and the old man Scott had seen in his dream came in through the large window riding on a-
“Holly , it’s a griffin!”  And it was.. and a large one it was. So large it could carried away all of the people in the class, and it had suddenly turned to Holly and Scott, zoomed toward them and grabbed both of them but somehow noone seemed to have noticed the griffin, though some people were wondering why the most unpopular people in the school were flying through the air. But they weren’t bothered because after all they were the most unpopular kids in the school.
The old man cackled as they flew through the now rather-battered window.
“I shall have all the griffins in my control now!” I think you know who said that.
Soon, Holly and Scott were flying through the sky, and they were nowhere near anywhere they had seen or learned about, so they had no real way of knowing where they were or if it was possible, then they were going back in time- and to who know’s where in time…

Wonders of the World- Grade 4 Enrichment Reading

By Caitlyn Moon
Ms. Mather’s 4th grade reading group is working on a project about the 7 ancient and medieval wonders of the world. They include The Great Wall of China, The Statue of Liberty, The Statue of Zeus, and many more. The readers researched their Wonder of the World and made a Google presentation with the facts. They will be sharing their presentations next Tuesday.
My Wonder Was the Great Wall of China. The Great Wall is about 30 feet tall. The Chinese people built it to protect them from enemy countries.

Yankees

By Jack Mattingly
One of the Yankee players has the same last name as me, Don Mattingly. Don Mattingly’s real, full name is Donald Arthur Mattingly. Don won so many metals. Don throws and bats with his left hand. He was on the Yankees team from 1982-1995. In his last game, which was on October 1, 1995. he was 34 years old.
The Yankees have been playing since 1903. They came in fourth place during their first season. The person who managed the team was Clark Griffith. The first game the Yankees played was against the Baltimore Orioles.
One of the worst years for the Yankees was 2014. They won 84 games but they lost 78.
Some of the nicknames for the New York Yankees are the Bronx Zoo, New York Highlanders, the Yanks, the Bombers, The Bronx Bombers, the Pinstripe, the Pinstripers among other nicknames.
Some of the years they won the championship were 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2009. They went to the championship four times in a row and won three times in a row. They got to the championship the most in the MBL. The Yankees were the first baseball team to three-peat as champions since 1872-1974.
Whenever the Yankees played a home game they played it in a stadium called the Yankee Stadium in which they played from 1923-1973 and 1976-2008. It was called the Yankee Stadium until they moved it to another stadium in 2009 to now. The new stadium is also called the Yankee Stadium too.
