3rd Grade Field Trip

  THE THIRD GRADe FIELD TRIP

For the third grade field trip we went to The Connecticut Historical Society and The Old State House. They are both in Hartford.

We learned why we are called the nutmeg state. One reason is good, one is bad . The good one is that there were a couple of peddlers that sold a lot of nutmeg. As time went on there were   more and more peddlers.

The bad reason is that peddlers sold fake nutmeg that was wood. People bought it and when they put it on food they were eating wood.

The lady guiding us sent around a nutmeg and asked if it was fake or not . It was fake. It was made of wood.

When we went to The Old State House where we renacted the story of the   Charter oak. Then we did a scavenger hunt. after that we got to dress up! finilly it was time to go back to school. it was a great field trip and i hope third grade can have another!

How Big is a Billion?

How Big is a Billion?
In math enrichment 4th graders are participating in the How Big is a Billion project sponsored by H&R Block on Facebook.  If one of Mrs. Terry’s enrichment students win they will win Vinton school $3,000. In this online contest you had to come up with a way to make a billion. For example, you could ask , how many people can you feed with $1,000,000,000 or how many pairs of shoes would each NBA player get to have a billion total pairs of shoes in the NBA. The enrichment students had to create posters to go along with their question. At least half of the poster had to be hand drawn or it couldn’t win the prize money. The students posters came out very, very, very, very, very, very well, in Mrs. Terry’s opinion. We all hope that one pair of students win the $3,000 grant for Vinton school!

By Lily Helphinstine & Clara Shangold
          All the flowers are blooming
            The animals are moving
              The sun is coming in
             The snow is going out

In winter we wanted the snow
And now we want it to go
           Now that spring is here
            Everyone can cheer
No more snow for this year

Now that the Easter Bunny is here
                    Everyone can cheer
He is giving out Easter eggs                                            And no one has to beg

Google Docs

                               Google docs
In 3rd & 4th grade we are getting Google accounts.
It is like Microsoft word but you have an account.
You can also email your friends!
You also get something called Chromebooks-- they‘re like mini laptops.
So, why not get a Google docs account or a Chromebook!
They are both really fun.

Vinton Science Fair & Invention Convention 2014

Science Fair and Invention Convention
The Science Fair and Invention Convention is on Thursday, April 24th. For the Science Fair Kindergarteners can do a collection, a demonstration or an experiment.  First graders through 3rd grade will present demonstrations or experiments. This year all 4th graders will conduct an experiment.  Mrs. Terry is hoping many 4th grade projects to conclude with participation in the Science Fair or Invention Convention.

To complete a Science Fair project you’ll need to go through the scientific method 1) Formulate a question 2)Do research. 3) Make a hypothesis or guess. 4) Plan the experiment. 5) Conduct the experiment. 6) Record data. 7) Make a conclusion. If you follow the scientific method your project will be a success.

A Science Fair project answers a question. Some good ideas for the Science fair are... can a plant survive in a liquid other than water, how much pressure can a balloon take before it pops, and what preserves an apple the best. Also, if these ideas don’t interest you, go online to sciencebuddies.com.

The Invention Convention solves a problem such as, not being able to reach the top shelf, stuffed animals falling off bed at night, a useful way to get rid of old stuff lying around. As you can see in the examples above, the Invention Convention solves a simple, everyday problem.

To have a successful invention first you need to do research. Check if something is already invented for your problem. Next, plan a prototype or model for your invention. After that build the prototype you planned out. If you are participating in the Invention Convention make sure your invention is into Mrs. Terry before April break if you want it to be considered to go to the Connecticut State Invention Convention..

Mars Opinion Piece

Mars Opinion Piece
In 2035 people will be able to live on our final frontier-Mars. Many people have already paid to move to the red planet, but one person who hasn’t and never will is …… me! I’m fine where I am with my feet on the ground, home sweet home on planet Earth.
My first reason for staying on Earth is the unknown dangers of Mars. The only information we have about Mars is from robots. The robots may not have seen everything, and may not have noticed any dangers. Since we don’t know a lot, the dangers on Mars could be endless.
Another reason for not going to the red planet is the crazy temperature. For instance, in the day it gets so hot, you’ll fry like an egg. At night, it gets so frigid you’ll turn into an iceberg. The crazy temperatures of Mars aren’t my favorite things.
Lastly, if I went to our final frontier, I’d miss my friends on Earth. On the red planet, it would be literally impossible to find friends as good as the ones I have on Earth. Also, on Mars there would be no lovely teachers at Vinton. My friends (and the great teachers) couldn’t be replaced by others on the red planet.
As you can see, I’ll be staying on Earth mainly because of the unknown dangers of Mars, the crazy temperatures, and missing my friends. So take my advice and when you have the opportunity to go to Mars, say, “No thanks, I’ll stay.”

Big red hats, breaking bats,
Victories, and the dirt that makes you sneeze!
Snaps, crackles, and pops!
Ortiz is on 3rd.
Then Dustin hits a home run…………………………
NOW THE GAME IS FINALLY WON!
The next game is going to be fun,
Another victory to be won,
Gatorade and PowerAde,
More dirty cleats,
Hit the ground like drum beats,

Then we make it to the World Series!

Dolphins
Baby dolphins, called calves, and adult dolphins are really playful. Dolphins can swim as soon as they are born. When the calf is born the parent lifts it to the top of the water so it can take its first breath.

Dolphins usually live by the Equator but some of them live in different places. For example the River Dolphin lives in rivers or lakes, and the Hectors Dolphin lives near land.

Dolphins use echolocation. Echolocation works when dolphins produce a high pitch sound by listening to the echo and interpreting the time it took before the echo came back. Dolphins use echoes to locate fish and other objects.  The dolphin estimates the distances of the object.

Dolphins don’t have gills (gills are something that helps some animals breath under water.) They have blowholes. Dolphins have great eyesight.

St. Patrick's Day

                      St. Patrick’s Day
Have you ever heard of a holiday called St. Patrick’s Day? Well, every year it’s on the 17th of March.
Here are some facts about St. Patrick’s Day. Most people think the color that represents St.Patrick’s Day is green; but it is really blue. Green became associated with St. Patrick’s Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by many fairies and immortals, and also by many people to encourage their crops to grow.
Some people think  that the first St. Patrick’s Day was in Ireland; but actually it was in Boston in 1737. Did you know that in Chicago, on St. Patrick’s Day, the rivers are dyed green. In Seattle, there is  a ceremony where  a green stripe is painted down the roads. Some people wear green on St. Patrick’s Day to avoid being pinched. Isn’t that just crazy? There are so many other facts but that’s up to you whether you want to look them up. See ya!

The Comic Book Club

The Comic Book Club
By Andrew Li

Vinton had a comic book club! The club was held at the end of the day and was held by Miss Carbenell. The parents needed to pick up their kid at 5:00. At the club you listened to comics and you could even make one! You could also make a superhero! The last day was on 2/22/14. We came on Tuesdays and Thursdays. You could bring snacks.          (Sadly, the club is over for now.)
